Master Edits in Film

I decided to use the movie Incredibles 2 to show the use of master edits in film. The movie incredibles 2 is about telecommunications guru Winston Deacon enlists Superhero Elastigirl to fight crime and have the public fall in live with superheroes again. So, Mr. Incredible is left with the great challenge of staying home and taking care of 3 “rambunctious” children. As Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack offer Mr. Incredible a new set of headaches and family problems to solve, a cyber criminal called Screenslaver launches an evil plan to hypnotize the world through computer screens and now its up to the superhero’s to save the world.

1.  Contrast
This first clip from the incredibles movie shows the master edit of contrast because it shows us two different situations. This clip shows contrast because in the first half of the film baby Jack-Jack is vigorously and aggressively fighting the raccoon in his backyard that it trying to get the food from the trash outside. Jack-Jack goes outside and uses his superpowers to fight the raccoon. Meanwhile, the second half of the clip shows that after the big fight Jack-Jack and the raccoon had Bob is peacefully and tranquilly sleeping on the coach inside the house. This clip portrays contrast because its the difference between the reckless crazy fight outside and then the calm sleep of Bob inside.

2.) Leit Motif

This second clip from the film incredibles is great example of the master edit Leit Motif because the clip portrays a timer thats attached to a bomb as the numbers are counting down. Clips similar to these are frequently used in films to signal and signify that time is running out, as the numbers are counting down, and that something bad will happen next if they don’t stop it before the timer runs out. In the case of the Incredibles movie, the timer was used to show the audience that the building was gonna explode in less than 2 minutes and they Elastigirl had less than 2 minutes to save everyone in the building from the bomb.

 3.) Simultaneity

This last clip from the Incredibles 2 movie uses the master edit of simultaneity to show different actions occurring at the exact same time. In the first half of this clip we can see Elastic Girl driving and airplane and saving a women, which is the ambassador. They both jump out of the plane and the plane explodes seconds later; this shows us that Elastic Girl saved the ambassadors life and was in a life or death situation. Meanwhile the other half of the clip shows us Bob making breakfast for the kids. The day is bright and sunny and looks like a good normal day. In the film you can see when the clip cuts back to the house where Bob’s waffles are ready to served and eaten for breakfast. These two scenarios were occurring at the same time, one was Elastic Girl saving the ambassador and the other is Bob preparing breakfast waffles for the kids.
